What is Zen Do Kai?
Modern Skills - Traditional Values. Zen Do Kai is a Martial Arts System designed over four decades ago; founded in 1970 when Bob Jones opened his first martial arts club in Elizabeth St., Melbourne.
Zen Do Kai has never had a closed attitude, nor is it a closed system. Zen Do Kai is a totally open system, and as such has to be open to influences and ideas from all around the world.
Using modern self defence principles but keeping with traditional martial arts values, we seek to improve the system, improve ourselves and to be aware of creating the opportunities for the individuals within our organisation to achieve their personal best. We are proud, not only of our system, but of the many thousands of students that have developed from it. Train in Zen Do Kai and we are sure you will find the experience fulfilling, exciting and most of all .... enjoyable.
Our syllabus not only includes what can be described as Karate techniques and Karate Forms (or Kata), but also the principles and practices of realistic personal defence strategies, close quarter combat (cqc), locks, holds and restraints along with escapes, throws and falls, vital point striking, grappling, as well as traditional weaponry like swords and staff at higher levels. Although from the outside, Zen Do Kai may seem to be simply a mix or blend of variour fighting traditions such as Muay Thai, Karate and Jiu Jitsu to make a new "style", Zen Do Kai is definatley much more than merely the sum of its parts.
Zen Do Kai is not longer the art OF other arts, it is the art OF ALL arts - an art unto itself, the infinity of Martial Arts with limitless potential for anyone who makes it a part of their life.
For us, Zen Do Kai translates as - "the best of everything in progression".
If you want a life long pursuit that will develop your health and fitness while building your self confidence and teaching you how to protect yourself then you want Zen Do Kai.

What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai / Kickboxing is an exciting and powerful martial arts/sport that is taking the world by storm. Soon to be an Olympic sport, Muay Thai is a combat sport that allows combatants to strike with fists, feet, knees and elbows in full contact competition and is widely regarded as one of the most effective ways to strike and defend while standing available. Muay Thai is considered the national sport of Thailand, and just like Australia has a football and cricket ground in every town, Thailand has Thaiboxing (Muay Thai) stadiums in every town, sometimes more than one. Muay Thai is a truly ancient art that has developed into an exciting and challenging sport that still retains it's mystical origins, full of superstitions and rituals, making it not only a modern and scientific sport, but also a fascinating art deep in history and tradition.

Just so you know ...
It is important to note that Gladstone Martial Arts does not have any "street fighters". The gym has combat athletes concerned with being able to defend themselves in the street. A byproduct of that training is sometimes the desire and ability of its athletes to compete in MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ or submission wrestling competitions. It is training in an "alive" manner that will better prepare our members to be successful in whatever endeavors they choose.
The vast majority of the members at Gladstone Martial Arts train exclusively for fitness and fun, which translates to stress release and a sense of well being. Drilling and sparring for sport translates to the most intensive, challenging and safe way to build the necessary attributes for self-defense as well as build overall fitness.
